What the NIE actually is
The NIE — Número de Identidad de Extranjero — is the identification number Spain assigns to foreign nationals who need to deal with the Spanish administration or carry out transactions with financial consequences here.
Without it you cannot buy a property, open a bank account, inherit with any normality, incorporate a company, obtain a digital certificate or file most tax returns.
One clarification that saves a lot of confusion: the NIE is an identification number, not a residence permit and not a work permit. Having one does not entitle you to live or work in Spain. Those are separate procedures.

The consular power of attorney
You have two ways to authorise someone to act for you in Spain.
Before a notary in your own country. The document then needs an apostille under the Hague Convention and a sworn translation into Spanish. Two extra steps, several hundred euros, and weeks of waiting.
Before the Spanish consul. A power signed at a Spanish consulate is a Spanish public document: already in Spanish, already carrying Spanish public faith. No apostille, no sworn translation.
Unless the consulate is impractically far or the waiting list is impossible, the consular route is almost always the better one. What I do is draft it with precisely the authority the matter requires — a power that falls short halfway through means starting again.
Frequently asked
Can I get an NIE without going to Spain?
Yes. It can be applied for at the Spanish consulate in your country of residence, or in Spain through a representative holding a sufficient power of attorney. The timing usually depends on consular appointment availability.
Does the NIE let me live in Spain?
No. It is purely an identification number for tax and administrative purposes. Residence and work authorisations are separate procedures, and where those are needed I refer you to a lawyer specialising in immigration.
Does my NIE expire?
The number itself is personal and does not change. The document evidencing it may have a limited validity depending on how it was obtained, so keep the original.
What does it cost?
It depends on the procedure. From €220 including VAT for straightforward matters; official fees are paid separately and itemised in the quote, which you receive in writing before anything starts.
Can you represent me in court?
No. Representation before Spanish courts requires a practising lawyer and a court agent. I act in administrative procedures and private dealings; if your matter reaches court, I coordinate with a practising Spanish lawyer.
